This position is located on the Lewis and Clark National Forest, Musselshell Ranger District, Harlowton Montana.
This is a Rangeland Management Specialist position assisting in or independently administering an ecosystem based rangeland and weed management program and related resource coordination.

Range:
Assists in or independently administers an ecosystem based rangeland management program and related resource coordination. Participates by monitoring, gathering, analyzing, and interpreting data to determine if goals and objectives identified for the land are being achieved. Prepares assigned portions of environmental assessments as a member of an interdisciplinary team. Prepares livestock management plans, determines location and proper stocking and locates, and, designs rangeland improvement projects such as fences and water developments. Maintains continuing liaison with permittee, affected groups and others to ensure compliance with agreed upon plans, and to advise rangeland users of various activities affecting their use of specific rangeland areas. Determines rangeland readiness inspects rangeland uses for compliance with permits, and monitors the results of the rangeland uses that are permitted or allowed.
Weeds:
Administers noxious weed program for the unit and may assist other units as needed. Surveys for weeds and advises supervisor of findings while developing strategies to address important changes. Identifies potential treatment sites and possible courses of action concerning noxious weeds. Keeps records of pesticide applications and monitors effect. Develops project plans for weed treatments and follows contract requirements for weed controls. Assists in contract preparation and monitoring performance of contractor herbicide applications. Assembles and maintains spraying equipment including calibration according to pesticide labels and/or according to different weed species, soil types, potentially affected water tables and sensitive plant populations. Performs seeding and fertilizing. Supervises and instructs small temporary crews in weed control efforts within the Forest. Ensures crew safety and environmental requirements including when using pesticides. Performs supervisory duties 20% or less of the time including but not limited to; planning work, communicating guidelines, active listening and providing active advice and counsel while promoting non-discriminatory employment practices.
REQUIREMENTS:
Incumbent must have or be able to obtain a pesticide applicator certification.
May be subject to satisfactory completion of one year probationary period or trial period.

Bachelor's Degree: range management; or a related discipline that included at least 42 semester hours in a combination of the plant, animal, and soil sciences, and natural resources management, as follows:
Range Management -- At least 18 semester hours of course work in range management, including courses in such areas as basic principles of range management, range plants, range ecology, range inventories and studies, range improvements, and ranch or rangeland planning.
Directly Related Plant, Animal, and Soil Sciences -- At least 15 semester hours of directly related courses in the plant, animal, and soil sciences, including at least one course in each of these three scientific areas, i.e., plant, animal, and soil sciences. Courses in such areas as plant taxonomy, plant physiology, plant ecology, animal nutrition, livestock production, and soil morphology or soil classification are acceptable.
Related Resource Management Studies -- At least 9 semester hours of course work in related resource management subjects, including courses in such areas as wildlife management, watershed management, natural resource or agricultural economics, forestry, agronomy, forages, and outdoor recreation management.
OR
Combination of education and experience -- at least 42 semester hours of course work in the combination of plant, animal, and soil sciences and natural resources management shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
In addition to the basic requirements, the following additional education and/or experience are qualifying. Transcripts must be provided for qualifications based on education. Specialized experience is defined as experience that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled and has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
GS-7 : One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-5 grade level; one full year of graduate level education; an appropriate combination of graduate level education and specialized experience; or Superior Academic Achievement (go to this site determine if you are eligible: ). The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university and demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work.
Examples of specialized experience are: Preparing various rangeland maps, collects and compiles vegetation management data to determine rangeland activity suitability, ecological health, ecological status, trend and grazing capacity of the rangeland resource prior to preparation and implementation of grazing strategies designed to help achieve land management plan goals and objectives; conducting livestock checks and counts to determine that only authorized animals are being grazed on National Forest System lands or other lands under Forest Service control; updating rangeland and livestock data bases and prepares grazing reports; accepting grazing and other rangeland activity applications, explaining the permit terms to the permittee; or assisting in surveying, collecting data, planning, or application of plans for the control of noxious weeds or rodents, etc.
GS-9 : One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-7 grade level; master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B. or J.D., if related; or an appropriate combination of specialized experience and education (only graduate education in excess of 18 semester hours may be used to qualify applicants for this grade level). The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university and demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work.
Examples of specialized experience are: Assisting in rangeland area analysis to determine ecosystem health, diversity, trend, successional stage, site potential, desired plant community grazing capacity of the vegetation and any special problems connected with the specific land area involved; collecting and analyzing rangeland resource data; monitoring and evaluating the impact of various rangeland activities on other resource management activities and uses; assisting by developing unit rangeland area livestock management plans/strategies which help coordinate livestock and other grazing uses with other resource management and land use activities; initiating contacts with local rangeland users, explaining the Forest rangeland program, answering questions, and coordinating with rangeland users to help solve rangeland problems; preparing reports that present data and other information recording the results of field data gathering, evaluations, or surveys; or directing programs for control of noxious plants, rodents, etc.
